Playing MIDI CDs with Microsoft Windows Vista
By Paul Vickberg
I have had no trouble playing MIDI files with Vista. I tried several
ways, all with good results.
1) I took a MIDI file I had made in Power Tracks Pro Audio with
several instruments and burned it to a CD. (Don't forget that you
have to change the extension from SEQ to MID.)
2) I took a BIAB song again with several instruments and made a MIDI
file out of it. I then copied it to the clipboard and opened it in
Power Tracks where I burned a CD.
3) I took a commercial MIDI file I bought from Band Trax and it also
played fine.
All instruments are heard and are not mixed up with each other.
Of course, the sound card in the laptop is pretty cheesy, but
connecting the headphone out to an external amplifier sounded okay.
The MIDI files, with the exception of the Band Trax one, were made on
my four-year-old Compaq Presario desktop computer running Windows XP.
My Windows Vista machine is a one-week-old Toshiba laptop running
Windows Media Player. The version of Media Player on my computer is
11.0.6001.7000.
Another thought is that you may have to finalize your CD before it will
play on another machine, but I found that not to be the case with my
CDs.
