Last year I recut an M-roll for Dave Ramey Jr. that was unusually
good, Clark M-725. It was hand-played, probably all 10 tunes by the
same artist, but no-one could identify who it was. I thought it would
make a very nice A-roll so I arranged it for that format. To me it
sounds better as an A-roll than an M-roll because the M-roll percussion
distracts my attention from the music. The arrangement captures the
flavor of an M-roll well if played on a machine with pipes, and does
quite well with a xylophone machine. Folks who have heard the roll
thought it was worth making copies to sell, so here it is!
A-101 (Arranged from Clark M-725 for A-roll format)
RED HOT, WHITE HEAT, BLUES
1. Freeze Out
2. Blue Gummed Blues
3. The Dirty Dig
4. Mama's Gone, Good Bye
5. Sweet Wimmin
6. Banjo Blues
7. Keep Off the Grass
8. Scalin' the Blues
9. Buffalo Rhythm
10. Whoop It Up
I'm not sure I'd call the tunes "red hot" or "white heat", but they are
very good music. The first five tunes are slow blues, the second five
pick up the pace. Tune 8 is a little unusual, and according to Robbie
Rhodes previously existed only in sheet music form.
