The carousel that Art Breitenbach spoke of in the 081213 MMD is the
1909 Looff-Mangels machine owned by Mary Ann Wintersteen. The saga
of that carousel, its long history of Wintersteen operation, and the
vicissitudes experienced by Mary Ann as she struggled to find a new
home for it are well known to carousel lovers. It was hoped that the
carousel could be relocated from Florida to its roots in Pennsylvania;
but that was not to be. The carousel was auctioned.
According to a pre-auction article that appeared in the July 12, 2008,
Wilkes-Barre, Pa., "Citizens Voice," Mary Ann planned to keep the band
organ and the ring machine. You can read the whole Wintersteen carousel
story in the "Citizens Voice" article by Googling wintersteen+carousel
and then clicking on the CACHED option below the hit for the newspaper
(clicking on the link to "Citzens Voice" brings up only the current
issue, which is not what you want; be sure to click on CACHED).
