In the 081125 MMD Craig Roothoff asks about the current market value
for the LR Steinway Duo-Art.
In 2006 I purchased a 1924 Steinway LR (no. 224284), gutted of its Duo-
Art system and I subsequently purchased an orphaned Duo-Art system from
another similar-sized Steinway (I don't know the model it came from
though). That being said, the total I paid for the whole lot was about
$6,500 including shipping. The overall condition of the case was near
perfect, the walnut case having been nicely refinished by a
professional some time in the 1970's.
I am very pleased with the sound of this piano, and I would say it
rivals the quality of any other Steinway of the period that I have
heard.
I have a question for the group regarding manufacture date. I have a
letter from Steinway, saying its date of manufacture was May 17, 1924.
What does that mean? Is it the date construction was started, the date
the piano left the factory, or maybe the date the serial number was
assigned? This is not a really critical inquiry, but just a matter of
interest.
