Duo-Art in 1912 Steinway Upright
By Craig Roothoff

Thanks, Jeffrey Wood, for the timing detail. My reference was not as
exact -- it seemed like 1911 or 1912, 1911 being even harder to believe.

I have gone through the piano very thoroughly and never found any
filled screw holes or signs of alteration. Everything appears factory,
but I'll keep looking. The stack uses the larger valves with cross
valve plates. Pump is 3-section (six bellows) steamboat type. It has
the big round (modulating?) knob at the keyslip, as seen in earlier
Duo-Arts. Tracking is of the conventional type with tracker ears,
as seen among most 1920s Duo-Arts. Pneumatics that make up the roll
motor are slightly larger than most commonly seen (as I discovered when
I used another motor for my dimensions...)

The only part that seems slightly suspect is the lower access cover.
The instrument is reticulated (tiger?) mahogany, however, the lower
cover board is conventional straight mahogany.
