Muffling Blower Noise
By Bruce Newman

Hi All, Vic Searle asked about quieting his PPCo blower. In Craig
Brougher's "Orchestrion Builder's Manual", at the top left-hand
corner of page 47, Paul Gottschalk's drawing shows how a person can
add a felt maze after-market to make the PPCo blower quieter. Paul's
drawing shows the air entering from the bottom but actually it enters
from the top, goes through the maze, and then enters the turbine. The
blower motor is supposed to be the type that separates the turbine from
the motor, so that the air traveling to your pipe chest is not heated
by the motor.

To get the unit even quieter, you can try building a box that
completely encases the PPCo blower box with a layer of muffler felt
placed between the two, to cut down on vibration noise. Be sure to
incorporate the felt maze as shown, being careful to keep the motor
cooling air separated from the pipe chest air. You can incorporate two
"mini mazes" for the intake and exhaust air that cools the motor but
don't get too complex as you want enough air flow so the motor doesn't
overheat.

Pictured at the bottom of page 47 is a blower designed by Paul
Gottschalk. I built several of these units when I worked for Paul and
we wholesaled them to PPCo. I'm guessing that these are no longer in
production.
