Welte Orchestrion at Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow
By Mark Jefford

Last week I visited the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum to hear
the Welte Style 3 orchestrion and learnt that it is now played only
by pre-arranged request, Monday through Friday.

I had arranged to visit as soon as the museum opened and was asking at
the information desk when I heard strains of faint music. I followed
Chris Luther to the source and enjoyed listening to three rolls for
over half an hour. The venue technician, Fiona Liddell, was in charge
of the roll player and Chris was the weight winder.

The museum web site address is http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/ though the
little that is mentioned about the orchestrion can be accessed through
http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/assets/fileStore/CNS-Art&Design.pdf

To hear the Welte Style 3 orchestrion in the Expression Gallery of the
East Wing feel free to make contact with the venue technician at the
Museum and Art Gallery, Kelvingrove, Glasgow G3 8AG, tel. 0141 276 9537.
Please note that the orchestrion will not be played during the Monday
to Friday recitals at 13:00 on the Lewis & Co pipe organ in the Central
Hall of the museum.
