Rolls for Peerless "Wisteria" Orchestrion
By Brad Hunter
Hello MMD readers: There is a very solid 99.5% complete Peerless
Wisteria for sale in the Philadelphia area. The coin-piano was stored
in an old house for the last 60+ years and is in very sound condition.
It has super art-glass with only two small cracks and richly figured
quarter-sawn oak veneer with only a few small chips on the front lower
legs. It is said to have last played in the early 1970s after some
"professional bellows was tube repair" was done at that time. The
selling price is $1800 which makes it very interesting, indeed!
I have an old video of the late John Maxwell's Peerless Wisteria
which is playing an early Peerless roll of Mexican songs. The music is
nothing short of stunning -- the Peerless arrangements are fantastic and
like no other coin-piano music. I believe John re-made a new cabinet
for his Peerless Wisteria.
Style "O" Peerless rolls seem to be very rare and hard to find. Six
rolls that are falling to pieces come with this great Peerless. Have
there ever been re-cuts made of this rare roll Peerless "O" format?
Could and should this great early coin-piano be converted to play
another roll format that is much easier to obtain? I would not want
to buy and restore a Peerless "O" machine and only have a handful of
old fragile rolls to play on her.
What would MMD readers do with such a beautiful and impressive and
early rare Peerless Wisteria? Would you stay with Peerless "O" rolls
or convert her to another roll style? At the selling price it is very
hard to "pass" on this great machine. My problem is I have far too
many rough project coin-pianos and have run out of storage room!
