Hello All -- Regarding Mike Murray's recent article about some of
his piano rolls tearing on the left spool side on rewind, I again state
the solution that has worked for me over the last 40 years of playing
rolls on my wonderful Cable-Nelson upright.
Remove your left spool flange and wind some tape around it so that
when you put it back it can be pulled out a little and allow the paper
to have room to move left and right without tearing. When rewound,
just tamp the roll down on the right flange, tighten a bit with the
left flange in and then pull it out again.
I have many old and brittle rolls and, with rewinding slowly, have
almost _never_ torn one. Also -- and I know there are those who are
against it -- remove the lower brake. The tight tension is death to
old rolls!
Good luck, Marc Goodman
