Vienna, Austria: I visited the Technical Museum of Vienna with my
students this past June and was very pleased with their extensive
display of pianos and automatic instruments. The museum is located
across the street from Schönbrunn Palace. It is well worth the trip
and the instruments are beautifully restored and operating.
I had to laugh when the Welte-Mignon Vorsetzer that they have was
demonstrated by playing a roll of the "Charleston" -- it was great.
Be sure not to miss the dark, little listening room where you can
watch videos of restoration, etc. Don't neglect the museum's many
other floors of fine and wondrous stuff.
