Art Reblitz's "The Golden Age Of Automatic Musical Instruments" has
a fascinating section on early collectors and collections. Pages
290-291 of that book, a section entitled "Svoboda's Nickelodeon Tavern
(Chicago Heights, Illinois, 1908-1982" summarizes the history of Al
and Flo Svododa's enterprise. A sidebar, "Where are they now?" states
that Al put his nickelodeons on the market in 1984 and they were
snapped up by collectors across the country. Art lists there many of
the instruments and their new owners.
Art also cites two numbers (Winter 1989 and Spring 1990) of the
MBSI's journal "Mechanical Music" that detail the history of Svoboda's
Nickelodeon Tavern. Art himself may also respond here in the MMD with
more information, since he was very closely involved with the
restoration and maintenance of the Svoboda collection.
