One "note" lower: surely E becomes D sharp, F becomes E, and F sharp
becomes F. On the other hand, one "tone" lower, E becomes D, F becomes
D sharp, and F sharp becomes E.
To make transposition crystal clear, try writing the notes onto a piece
of paper vertically, with equal spacing -- twice. Then, cutting this
into two vertical strips, place them side by side then move one against
the other, in slide-rule style, to see the transposition in any increment
you wish.
