Ray Siou, Wurlitzer Roll Dealer
By Bill Finch
In 1986 I bought ninety Wurlitzer Style 150 (Play-Rite) rolls from Ray
Siou. I bought a first batch of thirty at a really low price that
I can't quite recall. They came in a commercial egg shipping container.
The extra spaces were filled with an assortment of generic toiletries
from an airline in China and also about six VHS tapes of several band
organ rallies.
It occurred to me at the time that style 150 rolls weren't becoming
more plentiful so I asked Ray to ship one copy of all of the roll
numbers that he had in stock. Two more giant egg crates showed up
with an additional sixty rolls. This time the padding was about thirty
small carnival trinkets, two pocket knives, a tape measure, still
more toiletries and a tiny ball point pen that was also an FM radio.
I spoke to Ray several times later hoping to find additional rolls but
he had essentially gone out of the roll business, mainly because he was
having trouble getting around.
It was always a great pleasure doing business with Ray. I appreciate
his life of active dedication to mechanical music. Ray is a special
person.
