FS: "Emperor Concerto" New Duo-Art Performance
By Dean Howe
I thank everybody who bought my recuts of six Ampico pop rolls
[080710 MMDigest]. The project is finished now. I plan to do more
recuts when Bob Billings sets up his perforator for 88-note rolls
again in 2009.
Right now he is sending me the four-roll set of "Emperor Concerto"
by Beethoven. This set was recorded by Ian Mavor in the 'eighties
but never sold nor finished. He also did "Pictures at an Exhibition"
and "Wanderer Fantasy" and sold these sets which you may have.
I have asked permission of Mavor to finish and sell his "Emperor" and
this is fine with him. There will be only six sets for sale. It lasts
almost 40 minutes and is completely coded for Duo-Art. I have listened
to the test rolls and they are wonderful. There was never a roll of
the "Emperor" in America, only a three-roll set on very late Red Welte
from 1928 or so. It is so rare I have never found a set to recut as
Licensee.
The four-roll set of "Emperor" is for sale while they last for $200
plus postage; they must be insured. It was very time consuming to add
coding to the unfinished set, hence the price. Also it is very long
and expensive to recut. The set has single theme punches so the melody
does not slop over into accompaniment from theme setting. Send an
e-mail to me if you are interested.
If I had enough response I could do the other two Mavor sets later.
Right now I seek the Welte Licensee four-roll set of MacDowell's
"Eroica Sonata" played by Lee Pattison. I need to borrow the rolls
for scanning and they can be returned unscathed. My reading, done by
Michael Swanson, is perfect and optical, and does not damage the roll.
If Mike Kukral or Bennett Leedy has these rolls to recut I will bow
to them to do it. However, they need to be recut as it is the only
complete "Eroica" made.
Recutting rare and interesting titles will be my goal in the future
and I hope to do more Ampico pops with Michael or others. You may also
e-mail me with ideas for recut rolls. Most Duo-Art recut rolls are
made in England by Julian Dyer and these are wonderful as I have many.
