Mechanical Music Videos On the Internet
By James Black

Dear MMDers, I too have been disappointed by recent comments that
imply that in order for our YouTube efforts to be classified as good
we should make them "educational and interesting" for the general public
by showing all the mechanical bits and pieces doing their stuff in the
hope that it will attract them to become interested in our hobby.

Surely we can express our own interest, whatever that may be,
without being condemned as boring. Some instruments have very few
visible moving parts. Should they be excluded because there is little
to attract those from outside our hobby? Why do some automatically
assume that because we can see no moving parts then it will be of no
interest others?

I recall in my youth seeing an electric player piano being played
and being instantly hooked for life without seeing the insides
working. Certainly, I was desperate to know how it all worked and
that was partly what drove me to own one.

If you want to produce an educational video on the workings of
mechanical music then good for you but please don't imply that to
produce a good video we must all do the same.

James Black
