Creating New Expression Rolls From MIDI
By Spencer Chase
Hello, Larry Emmons' posting reminded me that I wrote a software
version of the hardware system he mentioned for the Duo-Art. With
a Duo-Art connected to E-Valves you can play expression codes from the
computer keyboard. By setting up Cakewalk to record and using MIDI-OX
to make the necessary connections it is possible to record the results
of your additions.
I also wrote a program that adds registered Duo-Art theme codes to
standard MIDI files. It attempts to identify notes that have higher
velocities than surrounding notes and places theme codes aligned
with them. You can choose the precedence of the theme codes and the
threshold for accented notes. You can set the threshold any place you
want and can even insert theme codes for all notes with the intention
of removing unnecessary ones later as it is easier to remove than to
insert.
Both of these programs were designed to provide a framework for further
editing. They in no way are supposed to produce a finished product.
If anyone is interested in experimenting with these programs, contact me.
I have a document somewhere that explains how to set up the programs and
the MIDI-OX connections. If nothing else, playing with these programs
demonstrates how difficult a job it is to create reproducing piano roll
coding. With some practice it is possible that these programs might be
used to make the job easier.
I was going to write an Ampico and a Welte version but since there has
been virtually no interest so far in the Duo-Art programs, this is not
very likely.
Best regards,
Spencer Chase
