Hi all, I have a tip for those re-builders who need to make a lot
of pouches. This method works beautifully and I thought I would pass
it along.
Everyone knows that an ideal pouch should not drag in the glue which
sits on top of the well. One way of virtually eliminating that problem
is to make a plug which sits perfectly inside the well which also has
a dowel in the center of it so that it can be removed easily. Once
this tool is complete, put some masking tape around the circumference
of the plug, in such a way to leave a clear space on the bottom for the
plug to fit back in the well. Build this tape up to about 1/16-inch
all around the plug.
When getting ready to glue the pouch, drop the plug in the hole,
quickly glue the outside of the well which will now leave an annular
ring of glue on the outside of the well of about 1/16-inch away from
the lip of the well. At this point the well is ready for gluing the
pouch. This will produce a perfect pouch installation. The glue will
not be dragged in.
One other thing I like to do is to draw a concentric circle around the
well with a circle template the size of the pouch leather. This yields
a perfectly centered pouch when you are done.
