Fair Organs Should Play More Modern Music
By Jim Crank
I may as well toss in my two cents worth on this discussion about
modern music played on organs -- fair or theater, it really doesn't
matter which one. The ATOS theater organ journal is currently also
whining about attracting kids to concerts and why they don't come.
Same thing really, different setting though.
Fair organs are blasting away at open air events and you can't avoid
them if you even wanted to. Theater organ concerts you have to
deliberately attend, so the choice is to either go or not. They have
other problems too.
Just what is this modern music people are mentioning? If you are
thinking about the film scores of John Williams, or Andrew Lloyd Webber
and such composers, then it is quite possible to have new music played
on these organs and the ones that I have heard are wonderful. That is,
providing the organs are large enough to do justice to the music; most
are so small it is more like a bunch of kids with kazoos.
