For sale: Viennese musical wall Clock by M. Miller & Sohn. I have had
this clock for years, hanging in my workshop, and it needs a good home
where it will be restored.
The clock is a 3-train, Grande Sonnerie movement, striking on two
gongs, with silk suspension and a six-inch porcelain Roman dial. The
gong base is signed M. Miller & Sohn Wien. I believe he was the maker
of the clock.
The case is gilt-wood and gesso picture frame measuring 17 inches by 21
inches with gilt-metal spandrels and mount around opening for pendulum.
The musical movement is two-air cylinder movement with reverse comb
stamped F. Einsidl, Wien. The 4-inch cylinder and pinning is in perfect
condition and the comb has 82 very finely spaced teeth. The music is
outstanding. There is one broken tooth probably from metal fatigue.
Leads are perfect.
This clock has issues and will need a lot of work to the back of the
case. The front is in pretty good condition, but someone did a dirty
deed to the back. The movement was probably originally attached to the
spruce wood back and had a mechanism to trip the governor after the
clock struck the hour. But someone did a number on it. The original
back was cut up and some of it used to do the re-engineering. The
movement was mounted to the bottom of the case and was too wide, so
about a half inch was added to the depth of the case, then the movement
was mounted.
The original winding hole was filled in with gesso or plaster and a new
winding hole was drilled, then the mess was glued together with hot glue.
Then a string was run out the bottom of the case so that the music
would be tripped by pulling the string. A Masonite back was fitted.
I removed all this and discarded it all. I removed all the "hot" glue
gun mess. I kept all original wood pieces which give a clue to the
original layout. This will have to be undone and put back as it was.
The trip mechanism will have to be replaced in order to have music on
the hour.
The clock runs but has a stop at the quarter hour caused by the hand
washer having a notch worn in it. This is easily repaired.
I don't have the time to repair it, I have way too many projects. If
someone wants this project, the price is what I gave for it many years
ago: $1,800.00. I can send pictures if anyone is interested.
