As an addendum to Peter Craig's comments about mechanical music in
London, Mike Knudsen may also be interested to know that Carters
Royal Berkshire Steam Fair (www.carterssteamfair.co.uk) will be open
on Boxmoor Common, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, between July the
11th and 13th.
Amongst the vintage rides and attractions with their attendant
transport that make up the fair, he will find a 46-key Gavioli in
the gallopers (carousel), a 46-key Chiappa on the Chair-o-planes and
a 47-key Dean with the steam yachts.
Hemel Hempstead is the next town west from St. Albans so it is
possible to visit both locations in a day as the fair does not close
until 9 p.m. on Sundays. The two towns are connected by an hourly
bus service on Sundays (Arriva bus route 301, see www.arrivabus.co.uk)
which departs from St Albans railway station and terminates at about
a 20-minute walk away from the common. A taxi will be quicker and go
'door to door', but of course will be considerably more expensive.
From the common, Hemel Hempstead railway station is a very short walk
away for a train back into London Euston station.
Whatever you do Mike, I hope you enjoy your time in the U.K.
