All the rolls being inquired about are Pleyel originals that were never
issued on Duo-Art, thanks to the decline in sales and withdrawal of the
Audiographic series. Aeolian had intended to issue them, apparently,
which is what got reported in books. Only the Firebird set was issued,
completed in March 1930. Hardly surprising that the rest never got
done.
Of course, none of the Pleyel rolls were actually played by Stravinsky.
Instead they were special player-piano arrangements by the composer
that were punched out metronomically by [Pleyel] factory staff. The
Firebird rolls need to have their speed changed fairly regularly,
according to the markings. The Firebird's dynamic coding was added
by Aeolian to rolls made by Pleyel some significant time earlier.
The rolls Aeolian issued that were actually played by the composer
were the three-roll Sonata and the first movement of the Piano Concerto.
These are quite different musically to the earlier Diaghilev ballet
scores, far more conventional all together.
