Moving a Wide Piano Through a Narrow Door
By Jeffrey R. Wood
I presently have a Steinway Vertegrand (upright) Duo-Art which
someone got through a narrow doorway by removing the fold-down
keyslip and sawing off about half an inch from each end of the
keyboard. It would certainly be easier to restore the case to its
original dimensions if the keyboard ends were never glued to the
sides of the piano or the key bed. Has anyone out there had the
experience of removing these components from a Steinway upright?
Knowing how difficult it is to remove a Steinway grand pin block
because of the way it is glued into the piano casing, I had always
assumed that the upright keyboard ends were similarly glued as well
as screwed into place. On the other hand, could Steinway have been
inclined to accommodate the occasional need for temporarily reducing
the depth of an upright instrument because of a too-narrow doorway?
