The world of mechanical music, and indeed the world itself, lost a good
friend with the death on May 12th of Bob McCord, of Creutzfeldt-Jacob
disease, a brain disorder contracted by less than one in a million people.
Bob was a one-of-a-kind guy, and everyone who came in contact with him
will never forget him, or run out of stories to tell about him. His
first love was originally circus memorabilia, but when he discovered
mechanical music he jumped in with both feet and amassed a super
collection in a very short time.
He was enthusiastic about everything he did, and he put the town of
Calabasas, California, on the map when he opened his Sagebrush Cantina
in 1974. His generosity was legendary, from sending money to schools
in small, poor villages in Africa, hosting toy drives, buying a bobsled
for the Jamaica bobsled team, having free Thanksgiving turkey dinners
for every senior who came by, and the list goes on and on.
Bob traveled extensively, and enjoyed everyplace he went. Those of us
who knew him will miss him greatly, but he will live on in the minds
and hearts, and in the "Bob" stories.
