I enjoyed reading the posting in the 080404 MMD about Karl King.
When I was in high school (1960-1964), our band participated one year
at a massed band day for a halftime show at Northwestern University in
Evanston. I don't remember how many high school bands participated,
but there were enough of us to completely cover the football field.
The honored guest conductor of the day was Karl King. If it was 1962,
that would have made him 71 years old. He conducted from a podium atop
a scaffold tall enough so he could be seen across the field.
An assistant helped him climb the stairs up the scaffold and made sure
he didn't teeter. Of course, we played "Barnum & Bailey's Favorite."
What a thrill!
There is an excellent web site devoted to King at: http://karlking.us/
The site's photo archive section has many fascinating pictures of events
in King's career.
