If you are totally new to player restoration, you will find that many
places will even act like they don't need your business. Some supply
places will not even sell to anyone who can't prove they are in
business. Order takers can be judgmental.
I highly recommend the Player Piano Co. (PPCo) in Wichita, Kansas.
The owner, Durrell Armstrong, is knowledgeable and has been in business
over 50 years. The quality and diversity of his supplies and materials
are very good to excellent. They will give good advice, no
judgementalism and everyone gets the same prices.
Some supply places are "geared" more towards pipe organs, other places
are "geared" more towards regular pianos. Not PPCo. Experienced
restorers usually go to many different places for supplies but a
beginner should rely on PPCo unless otherwise guided by an experienced
restorer. John Tuttle's web site, www.playercare.com, has great advice.
I doubt very much one would even find a computer at Player Piano Co.
PPCo does not have a web site. Durrell is not a technology buff, but
I don't hold it against him. Durrell has been great for our business.
Durrell started up PPCo at a time when virtually nobody wanted anything
to do with player pianos. I think AMICA should overlook the fact that
Durrell is in business (make an exception) and give him a lifetime
achievement award. Some of us at the Lady Liberty Chapter have tried
to make that happen.
