Bruce Clark asked about a home air cleaner and purifier that produces
ionized air and possibly ozone in the home air and it's effect on
rubber bellows cloth.
I now have this same concern. For many years I have had a very costly
Honeywell electronic air cleaner system installed in the return air
ductwork of my home forced air heating and cooling system. This system
cleans the air circulating in the entire home. A similar Honeywell
system is used on all U.S. submarines.
The high voltage ionizer system (50,000 vdc) uses two collector cells.
The first cell has a grid of fine ionizing wires that sends a very high
voltage DC charge into the air. Past these wires are a series of
collector plates that are charged to attract dust, pollen, smoke, etc.
There is also a secondary collector-only cell downstream of the first
cell. You can actually hear, and see crackling and arcing when very
large dust particles hit the collector plates.
This system collects 99.99 % of all dust and smoke particles, etc.
It works very well for parties where many smokers are in the home at
one time. It is very efficient and works very, very well.
But... During long periods of my heating/cooling system operation
you can actually smell the distinctive sweet smell of ozone from this
system. You may have noticed this ozone smell after a heavy electrical
storm with lightning, or during high voltage welding, electric arcing,
etc.
I have often wondered about this ozone issue and its effect on rubber
products in my home, as well as its health issues. Now that I have
many pneumatic music machines in my home I have to wonder about the
effects on rubber bellows cloth, tubing etc. What are your opinions
on this issue?
