In response to Ken Vinen's question about roll A-802, this is
not a real Automatic or Clark roll, but is material assembled by
Play-Rite and given the number 802 incorrectly. The songs may have
come from another roll and mis-numbered or it could be a composite
roll. In any event, the tunes requested are still unidentified.
I have been unable to find another roll with a similar song line-up.
Clark A-802 and Automatic A-802 have different songs from those
listed by Ken Vinen. Columbia and Capitol rolls start at higher
numbers. I can't find any match on Cremona or National. (By a match,
I mean a roll with all the songs listed by Ken but with another roll
number). U.S. Music rolls have higher numbers.
From the songs, I would date Ken's roll at around 1920. Clark rolls
were numbered around 149 then. Many of these same songs are on
Automatic roll A-715. Also, the song listed as "She's Always Singing"
should be "She's Always Singin' the Blues.
Automatic 715 has the following songs from the unknown Play-Rite roll:
2. Home Again Blues
3. She's Always Singin' the Blues
6. No Wonder I'm Blue
7. The Ghost of Mr. Jazz
8. Spooky-Ooky Blues
You'll notice that the order of the songs is different. Also, the
other songs on "roll A-802" can be found scattered among other
Automatic rolls. Therefore, either Ken's roll is a composite or has
an incorrect number.
This type of thing has happened on other Play-Rite rolls. For
example, Ray Siou once issued a roll with the number Clark 4X-366.
The real Clark roll with this number had different tunes. It was,
in fact, a composite of tunes from Automatic G rolls.
Best regards,
Matt Jaro
