Cost of Membership in Mechanical Music Societies
By Bill Maguire
I don't believe the words 'AMICA' and 'expensive' should be used in
the same sentence. I agree with Eliyahu: $47 is not a lot of money
and it is reasonable and affordable.
By comparison, I just sent a check to Piano Technicians Guild for
$245 for this year membership. I spent $59 on my AMICA membership.
Both fees include membership in local chapters, a web site and other
similar things. Both organizations have a professionally published
magazine or bulletin and other opportunities to network, socialize
and learn.
The PTG magazine comes every month and AMICA's Bulletin comes every
other month. The main difference in benefits is six magazines per
year, because both local chapters meet just as often. The PTG offers
some additional benefits but they cost extra.
Being in the player piano servicing business I like the fact that the
PTG is more focused on technical aspects. The AMICA Bulletin is very
expensive to produce and mail (per person) because AMICA is a relatively
small organization. AMICA can offer a lower cost membership by emailing
the Bulletin to certain people instead of the hard copy.
