Player Piano Rolls Accompany the Phonograph
By Jere DeBacker

I looked up the list of rolls and records for the playing of records
and piano rolls together and was pleased to learn of these. I am
currently working on an absolutely beautiful Apollophone that belongs
to a woman whose grandfather bought the piano new. It is serial number
19331 and is an electric/pump Art-X expression system with the wind-up
roll drive motor. It has a crank out the treble side for winding the
same motor for the phonograph.

What seems unusual to me is that the mechanism is set up to play
_only_ one or the other -- the piano or the phonograph only at a time,
but not both! What a disappointment. At a recent phonograph club
meeting we tried a regular player piano and a phonograph together and
really had fun. When we got them synchronized, they sounded great
together!

Also, AMICA member Jerry Biasella in Chicago has an Apollophone and
a collection of 40 some rolls that have matching records. We are
working on an article for the AMICA Bulletin about the Apollophone
pianos and we'll probably publish a list of these rolls and records
there.

Thanks,
Jere DeBacker
