Mechanical Music Art in Seattle Museum
By Ed Chaban

Kinetic Sculptor Trimpin & Experience Music Project Seattle

My family and I moved to the Seattle area some time ago. One
evening I saw a TV documentary on this local artist who works with
kinetic musical art. This weekend I took my two oldest sons to the
Experience Music Project at the Seattle Center. Trimpin's "If VI
was IX" is the centerpiece of the exhibit area. It is a two-story
tornado shaped tower of guitars, with a number of solenoid actuated
electric guitars interspersed throughout. Two stations with
headphones allow the viewer to hear the tunes being played.

While the music celebrated at the Experience Music Project may not
appeal to the tastes of many MMD readers, I feel a visit to this
museum is worthwhile especially if you have some children in tow.
The rare guitar collection is fascinating. The "Sound Lab" area
is equipped with drums, guitars and keyboards. I guarantee that
any child visiting will be entertained for hours. It is likely he
or she will end up asking for an instrument.
