B.A.B. Organ Master Rolls in Virginia City, MT
By George Karpel
Much has been said of the music machines at Virginia City, Montana.
However, there's another area which has not been mentioned. I'm
referring to the large collection of B.A.B. master rolls for carousel
organs.
When I last talked to the curator of the collection some two years
ago, I was told that the master rolls, totaling more than 200, were
being stored in a building that also housed the music machines. The
collection of master tunes were never made into rolls, much less ever
heard. All were arranged by J. Lawrence Cook.
I requested a list of the tunes from the curator, and have found on
this list many familiar and beautiful tunes that should be made
available instead of sitting on dusty shelves.
I wonder if there's anyone out there who would be interested enough
to find out how these master rolls could be borrowed and scanned to
computer data files so that they just don't collect dust, or worse
crumble from being stored without proper temperature and humidity.
