It's great to see such a passionate response regarding the collection
at the Nevada City Music Hall. Our family used to visit Virginia City
and Nevada City every summer, in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I was
just a kid, but I sure have fond memories of those grand music machines.
Back then, they were in good working order, playing loud and proud.
I can't imagine visiting today; I think I would cry!
Coincidentally, I found those pitiful YouTube videos of the collection
some time ago. Very depressing to watch. Hats off to AMICA, and all
those who stand behind the restoration of the collection... and a big
Thank You!
I have an LP of the Bovey collection, recorded in the 1960s. It
features the Gavioli, Marenghi, Dolle and Butterfly organs, Wurlitzer
180 and roll-converted Wurlitzer Theatre organ. It also features
a number of nickelodeons and orchestrions: Seeburg G and J, Cremona J,
Empress Y and Reproduco, in addition to a large Regina music box.
The machines are a bit out of tune in spots, but are a far better
representation than what is currently available. Perhaps if AMICA or
someone else would be interested in uploading these sound samples to
matching photos of the machines, the public would get a better idea of
how they are supposed to sound. I will gladly supply a CD copy to the
cause.
