Smashing a Piano
By Julie Porter

In a recent episode of "Doctor Who" entitled "Human Nature", the Doctor
(now played by David Tennant) has made himself human to hide in the
year 1913. There is a scene where, to avoid a pram carrying a baby to
be hit by a piano being lifted into an upper story window, that the
Doctor throws a cricket ball.

This sets off a chain of events like a Heath Robinson or Rube Goldberg
machine which involves the rope holding the piano to break. The piano
in the middle of the sequence does fall and every joint breaks apart
as the destruction is filmed in slow motion, and from multiple camera
angles.

There is also a supplementary show called the "Doctor Who Confidential"
which shown shortly after the episode airs. (I think these are also on
the DVD release of the episode.) In the confidential, it is shown how
the piano is suspended from a crane and the stunt was set up.
