Black Forest Flute Clock in English Case
By Julian Dyer
The Augustinermuseum in Freiburg has a flute clock by Michael Welte
(the man himself, no less!) in an Edinburgh-made case, looking
exactly like a Scottish longcase clock of its age, the mid-1830s.
The Bruchsal museum has one of these clocks with an illustration of
the Monument in London, although it looked to my glance in passing
more like a German-made instrument decorated for the British market.
I was recently discussing things at work with a Glasgwegian colleague
by the name of Tritschler, who said that his name originates in Germany
and indeed that his family were from Freiburg and went to Glasgow
(as family history relates) to sell or repair clocks and watches.
It certainly fits with the instruments I've seen. An interesting
historical sideline!
