Help Identify Spanish Street Barrel Piano
By Brad Hunter
Hello to all MMD members. I just found and bought a very old and
large street barrel piano with bells that I will be adding to my
collection. It is a crank-only machine, about four and a half feet
high, and about the same width, with two turned piano post legs out
front. It is complete and appears to be in very sound condition.
There is a framed and glass covered tune card that at the top that
says "Organillos San Francisco 1900" Does anyone know anything
about the maker?
I am not sure if they built the piano or just the barrel. This
barrel looks much newer than the piano itself, from the patina on
the bare wood.
There are ten tunes listed, in old handwriting. Most of the other
printing is heavily faded but I may be able to decipher it. The
language appears to be Spanish; I do not speak or understand Spanish.
There is also brass plate that is now very dark on the piano front
which may give a clue when polished. Is there anyone out there who
may be able to identify this piano from some photos? I would like
to know who built it, and when. Any history would be appreciated.
Are there any books on street barrel pianos? What pitch was such
a piano tuned to? How this barrel piano wound up in Center City
Philadelphia we will never know! Any info greatly appreciated.
