Mills Violano With Cracked Harp Plate
By Brad Hunter
I was called to inspect an unrestored Mills Violano in the Philadelphia
area for a collector friend. The machine is a mid-production coin-op
mahogany Violano that is 98% complete, with some slight dampness-re-
lated cabinet problems and the usual pot-metal intergranular corrosion
and swelling problems.
Here is the big issue: the harp plate is cracked through in the top
middle of the harp. Has anyone successfully repaired or reinforced a
plate that was cracked in that area? Welding or brazing could possibly
be done; but will it be successful? Should we risk buying this Violano
or just walk away? The price is approximately $8000.
Any and all opinions greatly appreciated!
