Hello to all. As Larry Emmons did, I had also installed one of
the "first generation" Gerety-Chase systems in my Duo-Art upright.
The hardware took a bit of time to fit into some of the tight spaces,
such as behind the spool box, but was straightforward and posed
no real problems.
The software proved to be a nightmare just to get the key mapping
accomplished. I thought the electronics and software seemed way too
complex. I never would have been able to figure out how to complete
the job without Spencer's generous and patient help.
By this time, I felt I knew Spencer fairly well and consequently, when
I heard that Spencer was coming out with his own simplified system,
I volunteered my time for prototyping parts and re-doing cad drawings
both for production and the manual in exchange for the newer system
and to serve as a beta test site.
Weeks later, I sent back my old system for an upgrade for the new
simplified system. I found that it was "a piece of cake" to install
and get working without any help whatsoever. Key mapping especially
was very easy. The system works perfectly and hasn't missed a lick
since it was installed.
As a product designer for over 35 years, I know what it takes to
conceive, design, prototype, test and market a new product as well as
provide customer support. This usually requires a team of dedicated
people -- and no new product ever goes to market without a few small
flaws. This is especially true of low volume products which cannot
take advantage of all the resources available to large companies which
produce high volume products such as your TV sets, washing machines
and refrigerators.
I am totally amazed and impressed with Spencer's talent and perseverance
in regard to his new e-roll system. He is virtually a "one man band"
-- he's performed all the functions of a design team himself. If it
were not for his passion to provide an excellent e-roll system, we
probably wouldn't have a truly viable e-roll system today. I say "hats
off" to the man!
Regards, Dennis Mead
