The Morris Museum will unveil nearly 10,000 square feet of new
public and gallery space that includes the unprecedented permanent
installation of the exhibition Musical Machines & Living Dolls,
featuring over 150 pieces from the museum's world-renowned Murtogh D.
Guinness collection of mechanical musical instruments and automata.
On Saturday, November 3rd, 2007, more than 300 individuals will gather
at an Inaugural Gala in celebration of this historic occasion, marking
the official unveiling of the exhibition Musical Machines & Living
Dolls and the Morris Museum's new wing. The Dowager Marchioness of
Normanby will lead guests in a celebrational ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Live demonstrations of select pieces from the Guinness collection,
as well as tours of the museum's new and renovated galleries will also
be offered. The black tie event with dinner and dancing will benefit
the many exhibitions, performances and educational programs that the
museum provides to nearly 200,000 people each year.
The Morris Museum will offer _free_ admission on Tuesday, November 6th,
2007, when the Community Grand Opening will celebrate the first day
that the public will enjoy Musical Machines & Living Dolls. Visitors
will be treated to live demonstrations of select pieces from the
Guinness collection, including the magnificent "Rex" orchestrion.
Standing almost 10 feet tall, the "Rex", made in Leipzig, Germany in
about 1915, was the type of mechanical musical instrument that once
entertained patrons in hotel lobbies and dance halls with its piano,
organ pipes, xylophone, bells, drums, cymbal and triangle. Today, it
is one of only a handful of surviving examples of the model in the
world.
Light refreshments will be served in the museum's Grand Entrance
Pavilion. More information is available at the museum web site at
