Early 88-note Keytop Piano Player
By Andy Hood

Regarding the novel 88-note keytop roll player for piano referred to
by Roger Waring [071016 MMDigest: Some years ago I bought a couple
of boxes of old (1920s/30s) gramophone magazines, hoping they still
had the player piano supplement with them. Alas, no; the reader was
obviously not a lover of player pianos but was an early gramophone
addict. Most of the magazines had had articles cut out and I don't
think there was one copy that hadn't been mutilated in one way or the
other, which was a shame.

Anyway, the player piano supplement got incorporated into the main
magazine towards the late 'twenties so I have a couple of interesting
articles and interviews that I fortunately photocopied -- before giving
the magazines away several years ago when I moved.

One of the articles from the March 1930 edition of 'The Gramophone',
entitled 'The Wearham Piano-Player', includes two photographs of the
unit, which came complete with carrying case. Whilst it is not the
instrument that is listed on eBay it is though of the same type, but
hand and arm operated. If anyone is interested I could scan the
article and make it available to the MMD Archive.
