I've subscribed to MMDigest for about two years now. In that time
I've acquired three music boxes: my first a small 60-year-old (or so)
Thorens cylinder box, then a 15" Regina, and recently an 11" Polyphon.
I've interest in acquiring an old, classical upright player piano with
full range keyboard, but I don't know what might be the best for a
start. I'm looking for something with a large available set of player
rolls, with beauty of sound, beauty of appearance, and relatively low
maintenance (once restored), and of course for the least investment.
Oh, and I forgot, I'm pretty capable with woodworking, mechanics, and
computers, so the idea of restoring an early work of art to its former
beauty intrigues me.
Could any of you give me advice on what to look for? What manufacturers
were best for this style and characteristics? Where might I look to
compare and learn their differences? What prices might I expect? Are
private individual purchases better than a specialty store?
Guys (and gals), any help you can give me would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
