Decals on Steinway XR & AR Reproducing Pianos
By Barry Dennis
I have two Steinway Duo-Art reproducing grand pianos which were
manufactured between 1922 and 1924. One is an "XR" and the other
is an "AR". Both were manufactured with the 88-note stack and the
Temponamic knob. However, the original gold decals on the fallboards
are different.
The "XR" decal consists of three rows of letters in gold which state
as follows: On the top row "Steinway", on the second row "Duo Art
Pianola", and on the third row in smaller letters "Reg. U.S. Pat.
Office".
On the "AR" the decal consists of two rows which state as follows:
On the top row "Steinway" and on the second row "Duo Art". I have
included quotation marks here, but there are no quotation marks in
the decals.
Does anybody know why the decals are different? Were they changed
during this time period (1922 to 1924) or were there different decals
for the "XR" and "AR" models?
Thank you all for your time.
