Steck Pianola With Reproducing Action
By Randolph Herr
I thought that I might be able to provide some information about
the English Steck Pianola that was mentioned in yesterday's MMD.
Back in the late 1960's I bought a Steck Duo-Art that must have been
made in England. The fallboard said Steck "Pianola Piano" and
underneath it were the words "Duo-Art". All of the letters were
inlaid in brass, including the quotation marks! It may be that only
the word "Pianola" had the quotation marks, instead of "Pianola Piano"
but I do not remember this detail for sure. I think that they used
single quotation marks rather than the double ones I just used.
I have never seen an American piano with brass inlay instead of
a decal. The piano on eBay seems to have its letters inlaid in brass.
I would guess that the piano in question had its fallboard inlaid
before they decided to make it an electric Duo-Art, and so putting the
words Reproducing Action on the fallboard was the best they could do
under the circumstances.
