Tom Jansen has set up an impressive system for recutting Red Welte
rolls, and the first step is to scan original rolls to make copying
them possible. He has even taken a few green Licensee rolls and con-
verted them to the Red system. A number of collectors like myself have
loaned our originals to Tom to make these computer scans possible.
Unfortunately re-cutting is very expensive, and several rolls are cut
at one time. If Tom receives an order for one roll, it means that four
rolls will sit on the shelves until they are ordered. Keeping such an
impressive catalogue in stock would mean a huge storage problem as well
tying up a great deal of capital. Tom is selling his rolls on an un-
economic basis as it is.
It is unreasonable to expect that all rolls will be permanently avail-
able. I have bought over 100 recuts from him myself and I know that he
has a good stock available. But as certain rolls run out or the more
esoteric ones turn out to be of less interest, it is only sensible for
him to wait for a few orders to arrive before setting his machine up to
cut another set. We are extremely grateful to have _any_ rolls of this
style available, since they are so rare. Previously one considered
oneself lucky to come across even a few originals. Now, thanks to Tom,
we have a large percentage of the original Welte catalogue available,
even if we may have to wait a short while for one or two items. Tom is
in the process of opening up a new museum in Monschau for mechanical
musical instruments, and I am sure that once it is completed there will
be more space for storage, and a larger turnover of rolls will enable
Tom to even further expand his catalogue.
