Mystery Play-Rite Ampico Rolls
By Jim Heyworth

Hello John,

I am able to supply two-thirds of the information you seek with regard
to the contents of your Play-Rite Ampico rolls, as I have copies.

No. 21: white paper, holes of regular 88-note size, definitely
smaller than real Ampico perforations, but not micro-perforations as
in many Play-Rites. In my opinion, compared with today's recuts, a
rather sloppy job. As with most of these made-up jumbo rolls, speed
has to frequently be adjusted during play. Starting tempo 65. Proba-
bly not worth recutting using this as a master, due to relatively poor
quality.

    1. Lohengrin "Wedding March," Wagner, played by Howard Brockway
    2. Die Walkurie, Wagner, transcribed and played by Howard Brockway
    3. Triumphal March from Aida, Verdi, played by Howard Brockway
    4. Polish National Dance, Op. 3 #1, Scharwenka, played by Xavier
       Scharwenka
    5. Etude Heroique, Leschetizky, played by Erwin Nyiregyhazi

No. 72: "Light Classic Program," yellow paper, holes slightly smaller
than regular 88-note holes, still not micro. Same comments apply as
above. Starting tempo 70.

    1. 67135 Concert Waltz No. 12, Friml, played by M. Volavy
    2. 67045 Rat Charmer's Song, from "The Rat Charmer of Hamlin,"
       Neuendorff, played by Howard Brockway
    3. 67103 1. L'Aurore, Friml, played by Friml; 2. Serenade, Tos-
       elli, played by George Kerr
    4. 60793 Carnations; Novelette, Albers, played by Victor Lane

I hope this gives you something to go on and that it isn't too much
of a problem for our beleaguered editor to sort out the formatting.

Jim Heyworth,
Sechelt, B.C., Canada
