Penetrating Oil - Marvel Mystery Oil
By Doug Hershberger
The discussion of lubricants and penetrants and their religious
or hysterical proponents and opponents has been most interesting.
I thought of another ancient product of good repute which was not
mentioned. "Marvel Mystery Oil" has been around since Noah's Ark and
until recently came in cans that would look perfectly appropriate
in a hardware store or auto shop in 1928. It was sold as an upper
cylinder lubricant with near magical powers of keeping internal
combustion engines running without major overhaul for extended periods.
Since it was made to burn I wonder if it is free of adulterants found
in oils intended exclusively for crankcase use and therefore perhaps
a good light machine oil. Someone pointed out early on that any oil
will wick into places by cap. action so it may be a very good and
"clean" penetrant.
