Hello (again) -- my name is Harvey and, while a former member of
this community, I have been inactive for several years due to other
responsibilities competing for my time.
My wife has a Baldwin Hamilton Manualo player piano, circa 1916 or so,
that we had rebuilt and enjoy a lot. While on vacation here in New
Hampshire (currently our piano and residence is Northern California)
a neighbor who was clearing out her father's house found a quantity of
old piano rolls which she sold to me for a nominal amount to get rid
of them.
Upon inspection there are 205 rolls, of varying vintage, condition,
manufacture, etc. Some I will want to keep and some I don't know what
to constructively do with. My first action was to quickly inspect and
inventory all the rolls, which I have done and documented in an Excel
spreadsheet.
Without unrolling or playing them, I made a quick assessment of
condition. Many of the older rolls have edge damage, though apparently
mostly on the first few feet of the roll. Some of the boxes and rolls
are pristine and as new, others vary down to one that is so brittle and
ripped that it is trash and only good to salvage spool parts.
I'd be happy to provide a copy of the inventory to any of you to
have insight on what I have obtained and wish to comment. Eventually,
I would expect to dispose of (sell? or otherwise?) many or most of the
rolls, but I would appreciate any insight available about the vintage
and possible value (to collectors or those simply wanting to have
a roll to play) so that I don't do anything foolish, like throw away
a roll someone might value highly for _whatever_ reason.
If there is a place I could post the inventory or send directly,
please advise.
Thanks -- nice to be back again.
