The Milton and Peggy Salkind International Piano Duo Festival was held
at the new headquarters of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music,
July 5 - 9. I attended two of the sessions and found them extremely
enjoyable. They played both four-hand [duet] and two piano [duo]
works. The pianos were top of the line Yamaha and Steinway pianos and
a Grotrian Duo Grand, which appeared to be two grands joined together
like Siamese twins.
Eight professional piano duos from all parts of the world performed
several times each. All were excellent, but I was particularly
impressed by the Riga Duo from Russia, the Oleyuria Duo from the
Ukraine, the Veri and Jamanis Duo from Pennsylvania, and the Tosheff
Piano Duo from Bulgaria. Two San Francisco Bay Area duos who were
present and excellent were Scorpio Duo and the Angelo Duo.
Works by about twenty composers, from Mozart to David Garner, were
presented, including three works by Gershwin.
What does this have to do with mechanical music? Only that it occurs
to me that some of the four-hand pieces at least would have been made
into excellent expression music rolls. One work, Valery Gavrilin's
"Sketches," played by the Riga Duo, was particularly great. Another,
Saint-Saens "Dance Macabre", also played by Riga, was equally good.
Unfortunately, Gavrilin came along too late to have made piano rolls.
Has anyone cataloged piano rolls of classical duo piano works? Does
anyone know what might be available in this category?
