Jim Cook's recent note regarding Audiographic rolls and capturing their
content via scanning has prompted me to demonstrate the good results
that I'm obtaining with a Larry Doe-designed MK4 scanner. Here's a
complete image of an Audiographic roll (including all the intricate
woodcuts and stencilled information) that anyone can view using the
steps below. The roll is Duo-Art Audiographic #A-15, "Liszt's Dance
of the Gnomes (Gnomenreigen)", played by Guiomar Novaes.
Here's the step-by-step process for those less computer-inclined.
There are two files necessary for download in order to both listen to
the roll and view its scanned image.
Firstly, the .zip file itself, which contains the MIDI file to listen
to, and the .CIS file, which stores the scanned image. The total file
size is 3.7 Mb.
Download this at
http://www.pianola.co.nz/audiographic/DanceOfTheGnomes(1862)_DuoArt-A15_GuiomarNovaes.zip
and unzip it to your folder of choice.
Secondly, to view the .CIS image, you need Anthony Robinson's free
CIS Viewer, available for download at
http://semitone440.co.uk/rolls/utils/cisviewer/CISVIEWER.ZIP (Easiest
to unzip CISViewer in the same directory as you unzipped the
Audiographic file to)
Now, simply run CISViewer by double-clicking it, then drag the .CIS
file over the CISViewer window and release. The scanned image of the
roll will now appear before you, but it will be inverted. You just
need to press 'F3' once and the programme will redisplay the roll at
the correct orientation.
Now you can scroll up and down the roll image as with any typical
PC programme. Press 'F1' for additional options such as zooming and
display modes.
Until the advent of full-colour scanners, the MK4 bi-colour method
remains at the forefront of roll-scanning at this time, able to
capture the Audiographic rolls in all their glory. All that remains
now is for someone to take the plunge and develop an economical method
of producing lyrics and other printed matter for recut rolls. I hope
that development comes sooner rather than later.
