MMD, I received yesterday what had been 65 intact, boxed Themodist
rolls. However, due to obvious mishandling by the Post Office and
inadequate packing, approximately one-third of the boxes are slightly
to extensively damaged. The damage was so extensive that so far in my
repairs I have found four rolls where the cardboard tubes were crushed.
You can imagine what the boxes looked like. Several were reduced to
their constituent panels. Strangely no paper so far has been beyond
recovery, just extremely wrinkled and creased. I have developed
recovery techniques for both the boxes and the rolls but the extreme
damage on these rolls has pressed me to the limits of my experience.
Now the point I wish to make is that this type of disaster can be
avoided almost completely with proper packing. Most importantly, never
ship rolls in any quantity lying down where heavy rolls can crush other
rolls.
Obtain a shipping box of sufficient height so that the rolls can be
stood on end. Place a resilient pad like bubble pack or foam rubber
beneath the rolls, preferably an inch thick. If there is space around
the sides of the box, stuff it full of wadded up newspaper or something
that won't shift and thus allow the roll boxes to shift. Add a layer
of packing on top of the rolls and tape it securely shut.
Now make sure the shipping label is on the top of the box so that as
it is transported the rolls will most likely still be standing on end.
It is simply human nature to leave the address label on the top of the
box. Following these procedures should prevent disappointments like
the box I received yesterday.
Successful shipping,
Tom Hutchinson
