Player Piano Plate Breaks During Restoration

I know this process as it has been around for as long as I can remember
and I have had cracked engine cylinder heads repaired with it. I have
doubts that this will indeed hold the stress of a piano frame. We must
remember that the stress in an engine head or block is way less than in
a piano frame.

The locks will hold the metal together (not pull, just hold) whilst
the pins then seal the crack and prevent sideways movement or twisting
of the two pieces. All the stress of holding it all together is on the
locks and the surrounding metal. It may be okay for small cracks but
I would like to hear from anyone who has used this successfully on a
real break in a piano frame.

We did discuss a brazing technique here on MMD some years ago and
I would also like to hear from anyone who has used this and whether or
not it lasted over time.

Kind regards
Bernt Damm
